Over my career I visited and consulted to a very broad range of businesses, from mum-and-dad stores, to franchises, to large corporations. And I can tell you that I mostly saw messes – I was never surprised at the business failure rate of over 90% because frankly most businesses were deeply flawed.

In fact most “businesses” weren’t really businesses at all. I say that because they simply weren’t viable (ie, didn’t pass even the most cursory due diligence process) or because they were “jobs” for the owners, who were getting very little income, couldn’t take holidays or even sick days, and which without the owners’ presence would simply cease to exist.

Maybe some people are happy with that, but that’s no way to build financial security, for yourself or your family, especially when it means a whole lot of stress.
